Umm... yeah.

SO apparently I haven't been nearly as good as swatching in December as I was hoping I'd be.  My knitting mojo dwindled, and what little was left was reserved for a few Christmas projects.

That said, I did manage to knit 21 swatches this month.  I was good for the first week or so, knitting one every day, but then I would alternate between a few swatchless days, and a few days where I knit a bunch of swatches all in one go - but I'll still post them by date just to keep it all organized.

Yarn: Patons Classic Wool Merino, 100% Worsted Weight Merino Wool, in Red

Hook: 4 mm / G-6 US

Gauge: n/a

Stitch Pattern: improvised

Source: n/a

Comments:  Technically, I crocheted this back in late September, but I thought I'd throw it in to the mix in honour of Remembrance Day.  And technically it is kind of a  swatch, because I figured out how to make it while trying to use up a very precise amount of leftover super-bulky yarn.  The shape of that particular flower's petals reminded me of poppies, so I decided to try it out with red yarn.

Yarn: Patons Classic Wool Merino, 100% Worsted Weight Merino Wool, in Plum Heather, and Patons UK Fairytale Colour 4 Me DK, 100% Wool in White

Needles: 4 mm / 6 US

Gauge: 5.75 stitches and 7 rows per inch

Stitch Pattern: Star Tweed

Source: BW1, p. 67.

Comments:  Last of the cheater swatches, which is probably why its so teeny!  :)  When I started working on this one, I was convinced I had knit the pattern already - it reminded me so much of the Daisy Stitch.  But the way it is worked is quite different, and when you compare them they actually look quite different too.  Personally, I think I also prefer the daisy stitch, but that may have something to do with the colours I chose to use.  :)

Yarn: White 4-ply yarn, in some kind of wool/acrylic mix.

Needles: 3.5 mm / 5 US

Gauge: 5 stitches and 7 rows per inch

Stitch Pattern: Frost Flowers

Source: BW1, p. 204.

Comments: I think I should have made this swatch bigger, to encompass more repeats of the pattern - I resisted because its a 32 stitch repeat, and I didn't want to make a ginormous swatch.  I just think that the 'flower' aspect of the swatch might be more clear with extra repeats, both vertically, and horizontally.   Maybe I'll use this in a lacy blanket someday, and then the pattern will be more obvious.

Yarn: Elann Peruvian Baby Cashmere, 60% Alpaca/30% Merino/10% Cashmere 4-ply, in Peacock

Needles: 3.5 mm / 5 US

Gauge: 5 stitches and 7 rows per inch

Stitch Pattern: Drooping Elm Leaf

Source: BW1, p. 217.

Comments: I think this is one of those lace patterns that would look better in a thicker yarn, knit on slightly too small needles.  The pattern is pretty clear in this photo, but in real life, its a little hard to make out the shapes of the leaves - and I think that would be corrected by knitting it in a thicker yarn.  This would make a nice winter wrap, I think - maybe in green, and then you could embroider little berries on it in places...

August 18, 2011

Yarn: Elann Peruvian Baby Cashmere, 60% Alpaca/30% Merino/10% Cashmere 4-ply, in Rose Heather

Needles: 3.5 mm / 5 US

Gauge: 5.5 stitches and 8 rows per inch

Stitch Pattern: Mrs. Montague's Pattern

Source: BW1, p. 211.

Comments: I like the story behind this pattern: "Mrs. Montague was a Lady of the Chamber to Queen Elizabeth I of England.  She made stockings for the Queen in this pattern, said to have been copied from a French design.  A pair of these stockings still exists today in the museum at Hatfield House." (BW1, p. 211).  With a stitch repeat of 16 stitches, you'd have to use pretty thin yarn to make stockings out of this yarn - you'd need either 65 or 81 stitches to get a full repeat around, both of which could make some pretty big socks in 4-ply yarn!

Yarn: Patons Classic Wool Merino, 100% Worsted Weight Merino Wool, in Plum Heather

Needles: 4 mm / 6 US

Gauge: 6 stitches and 7 rows per inch

Stitch Pattern: Oxox Cable, with the order reversed on the left-hand cable

Source: BW1, p. 255.

Comments:  I've seen this one used very often, especially in cabled sweaters for little girls.  I think I need to be a little more careful in my stitch formations - I don't like the split that has appeared in the middle of the Xs and Os.

August 16, 2011

Yarn: Schoeller + Stahl Merino Mix, 51% Merino/49% Acrylic Worsted Weight yarn

Needles: 4 mm / US 6

Gauge: 5 stitches x 6 rows per inch

Stitch Pattern: Hourglass Cable

Source: BW1, p. 255.

Comments: I'm classifying this next series of swatches as 'cheater swatches' because even though I took the yarn, needles, and patterns with me when I went to my friend's wedding, I didn't actually do any knitting while I was there.  Nevertheless, 7 swatches knit in 2 days still deserve to be catalogued!  I like the twisty stitches in this cable - it gives it a little something extra, and tightens the overall look just a bit.

January 28, 2011

No swatch today because I am very much unimpressed with knitting at the moment.  I knit and frogged an entire hat because the "7-101 year size" ended up being perfectly suited to a 4 year-old's head.  Serves me right for actually following a pattern that had no gauge, no reference to the type of yarn needed (even when it comes with a kit, "100m of yarn" is not enough information!!"), was missing one set of numbers (5 sizes listed, 5 cast-on amounts, but only 4 sets of numbers the rest of the way through), and doesn't give finished sizes.

This time when I knit it, I'm making my own pattern!

January 14, 2011 (1)

Didn't manage to make a swatch yesterday, so I'll post two today to make up for it! :)  Here's number 1:

Yarn: Elann Peruvian Highland Sport

Needles: 3.25mm / US 3

Gauge: 20 stitches x 32 rows per 4 inches in the eyelet panel

Stitch Pattern: A stacked eyelet pattern with 1x1 rib at top and bottom.

Source: I could've sworn I'd seen something like this in a book, but I looked through several and couldn't find anywhere - so I made it up!

Comments: I have an idea for a pattern... this is almost what I want, but not quite. You may see variations of this one again. :)

January 10, 2011

Yarn: Lion Brand Cotton-Ease - 50% Cotton/50% Acrylic, in Cactus and a smidge of Stone (it has not been blocked, hence the very uneven stitches!!)

Needles: 4.5mm / US 7

Gauge: 4 stitches x 9 rows (or 4.5 garter ridges) per inch

Stitch Pattern: Garter stitch

Source: N/A

Comments:  Cheater, cheater, pumpkin eater!  This is a cheat swatch for two reasons: 1) I posted it a day late, and 2) its no longer a swatch because its become part of the final project.  But hey, nobody is perfect, right?  :)   (of course that won't stop me from creating a "cheater swatch" so I can keep track of all my cheater swatches!)
